Acas Turns to AI to Tackle Rising Workplace Disputes

Conflict at work is nothing new. But according to recent research, tensions are rising. Pay disputes, performance disagreements, clashing working patterns, and even more serious behaviours such as shouting, discrimination or undermining colleagues are all being reported more often.

In fact, a YouGov survey of 1,000 employees found that 44% believe workplace conflict has increased in the past three years, with just 13% saying it has reduced. The impact of unresolved conflict is not only emotional; Acas estimates it costs the UK economy a staggering £28.5 billion every year.

Faced with this, Acas has announced a new five-year strategy which includes exploring the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in dispute resolution. But can technology really help resolve human disagreements?

Why Acas is Turning to AI

Acas is one of the UK’s most trusted sources of workplace advice and arbitration, handling thousands of cases every year. With demand rising, it’s understandable that they want to explore how technology can help.

AI could support their work by:

  • Streamlining initial case assessments
  • Analysing large volumes of employee feedback or survey data
  • Identifying patterns and hotspots of conflict in organisations
  • Providing information resources quickly to employers and employees

For businesses already stretched, this could reduce waiting times, free up advisors for more complex cases, and offer employees faster access to support.

The Role Only Humans Can Play

But while AI can offer efficiencies, experts are clear: it cannot replace human judgment, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Workplace disputes are often rooted in personal values, lived experiences, and subtle interpersonal dynamics,  things that algorithms can’t fully grasp.

A tool might flag potential risks or suggest solutions, but only a trained professional can understand tone, intent, and context. What feels like a minor disagreement to one person may be deeply hurtful to another.

What this Means for Employers:

For HR teams and managers, the message is clear: technology can support, but it’s not a cure-all. Employers should focus on:

  • Early intervention: spotting potential issues before they escalate
  • Training managers: equipping leaders to handle conflict with empathy and fairness
  • Clear processes: ensuring employees know how to raise concerns safely
  • Using data wisely: AI may help highlight trends, but people need to interpret and act on them

Getting the balance right between tech and human interaction will be critical. AI may help employers respond faster and see the bigger picture, but the trust needed to resolve disputes still relies on authentic, human-to-human conversation.

Where HR Makes the Difference

Conflict at work can quickly become damaging if it isn’t handled well. From strained relationships and falling productivity to formal grievances or even tribunals, the risks are significant.

At MAD-HR, we believe prevention and people-first management are always the best approach. While technology can play a supporting role, it’s the human expertise, fair processes, skilled mediation, and strong leadership that ultimately resolve disputes and rebuild trust.
