The Importance of Having a People Plan in Business

The Importance of Having a People Plan in Business

Every business owner has ambitions. You might want to grow sales, open a new office, or simply keep things steady in a tough market. Whatever the goal, there’s one factor that makes or breaks it: your people.

That’s where a people plan comes in. It’s not about creating another document for the shelf. It’s about making sure your team has the skills, structure and support to turn your plans into reality.

So, what exactly is a People Plan?

Most businesses have some sort of plan for growth – targets, financial forecasts, maybe even a five-year vision. A people plan is the part that says, “And here’s how we’ll get there with the team we have (and the team we’ll need).”

It looks at things like:

  • Do you have the right people in the right roles?
  • What skills might you need in the year ahead?
  • How will you attract and keep good staff?
  • What support do your people need to do their best work?

In short, it’s the bridge between your ambitions and the people who will deliver them.

Why you can’t afford to skip it:

The world of work has shifted. Employees expect flexibility. Skills are harder to find. Well-being is a bigger priority than ever. And technology is changing roles faster than many businesses can keep up with.

If you don’t have a clear people plan, you risk being on the back foot, and reacting to problems instead of anticipating them. That’s when things like high turnover, recruitment struggles,  overstretched teams and increased absence can start to creep in.

What goes into a good people plan?

There’s no one-size-fits-all. But most People Plans touch on the same core areas.

Structure

Is your organisation set up in a way that works today, not just how it worked five years ago? Look at whether teams are balanced, roles are clear, and whether you have got succession plans in place for key positions.

Recruitment

It’s a tough market out there. Your People Plan should spell out how you will attract the right candidates, what makes your business appealing, and how you will widen your net when talent pools are scarce.

Onboarding and Retention

Bringing someone new into the organisation is just the start. Your induction in terms of how you welcome, train and support them in those first few months makes a huge difference. Retention isn’t about gimmicks; it’s about fair pay, opportunities to grow, and a culture where people feel valued.

Training and Development

If your business is evolving, your people need to evolve with it. Training doesn’t have to mean big budgets; sometimes it’s as simple as mentoring or cross-training. What matters is that people see a path to develop and are engaged to be involved.

Pay and Benefits

Money matters, of course. But benefits like flexible working, wellbeing support or extra holiday can be just as powerful in keeping people engaged. A people plan gives you a chance to check how your package stacks up against your competitors or other local businesses.

Wellbeing

A tired, stressed team won’t perform at their best. Building wellbeing into your plan, whether through regular check-ins, an Employee Assistance Programme, or just more open communication, helps people feel supported. Seeking input from your team in terms of what wellbeing measures they would like to see can also improve engagement.

Diversity and Inclusion

Different perspectives make businesses stronger. Your People Plan should look at how you recruit, promote and support people from all backgrounds, and make sure everyone has the same opportunity to succeed.

Exits and Succession

People move on; it’s inevitable. A good plan makes sure you learn from those departures and have a pipeline of talent ready to step up when key roles become vacant.

What happens if you don’t have a people plan?

When we work with businesses that don’t have a People Plan, we usually see the same issues:

  • Constant firefighting to fill gaps
  • Teams that are stretched too thin
  • Good people are leaving because they don’t see a future
  • Missed opportunities because the right skills aren’t in place

It’s not always obvious at first, but over time these issues cost money, slow growth and damage morale.  In summary, lacking an effective People Plan can lead you to difficulty in achieving your strategic objectives.
